“Never take a life carelessly. It cheapens you, and diminishes you. Take life seriously, if taking life is your profession.”

Taking a Life

First, one must realize and acknowledge the fact that the act of taking a life in combat (i.e.: warfare—“him or you”) and self defense are not ‘murder’. A murderer is someone who stabs his victims in some dark back allies for the sake of the money in their wallets. A murderer is someone who kills the defenseless and the innocent. You must never sink to such a level yourself, but rather work to rid the world of such people.

Second, before one can be truly prepared for the act, one must push aside all doubts. One must decide--preferably well before the battle--whether or not you are indeed going to kill your target. You must decide whether you are willing to accept surrender. You must decide whether allowing your opponent to live is worth the risk. You must ask yourself—what would he do if he were the victor and not I?

Preferably, you should run every scenario through your mind before the battle so as not to be caught off guard should your opponent try and play dirty by begging for mercy only to stab you in the back as soon as you let down your guard. Unfortunately, not every scenario can be prepared for and not every event can be anticipated. Realizing this as a part of every day life, you must have some ground rules.

If you are, for example, attacked while traveling alone, you must recognize that chances are that the individual who has chosen to accost you likely has no intention of allowing you to live, and so if escape is not an option, you must be prepared to fight and win at all costs. There must be no hesitation--there must be no remorse. This individual is attempting to not simply take your life, he is attempting to rob your friends and loved ones of your existence. When in doubt, fight for the sake of your loved ones if not for yourself. And so it is important to act without hesitation when attacked, and put to rest the offender lest he do worse unto you--as he surely has to past victims--and should he succeed in combat against you, shall surly do worse still unto other—less prepared pray than yourself. A simply rule—if attacked without hope of escape—fight to kill.

But what if you are the attacker? What if it is your duty as a law-enforcement officer, or as a soldier, or as simply a house-owner defending your loved ones with a pre-emptive strike? What if the guidelines to the use of lethal force that you were told or trained to follow as the model citizen do not apply to the situation at hand?
This is where you must be careful. You must realize, before you land the fatal blow, that you will not simply be taking the life of your target, but you will also be eliminating everything that he will be able to become in the future.
You must decide with wisdom…but the time for that decision must not be made in the heat of battle itself, but rather, must come from deep contemplation (preferably) well prior to the battle.

Make no mistake, to take a life and gaze upon your enemy as the light slowly fades from his eyes is no small thing. Indeed, while everyone’s reaction to the act is different; such an experience may very well damage you for life. So at all times, exercise caution and avoid conflict whenever possible. The numbness that spreads over you as you make your first kill will eventually pass as you come to grips with the realization that death is a natural process of life—that those who fall at your hands must be deserving of such a fate. You are not a murderer. Through your actions you are either protecting others or defending yourself. There is no shame in such an act—if it is indeed justifiable for the ends listed above. Above all else, you must not hesitate—lest it be your life that fades from this world forever.

Regardless of what you decide for the particular circumstance that faces you, you must be prepared to fight to the death if you are the one attacked. No matter what your occupation or experience you must be ready.

You must be prepared to take a life.
