Purse safety: It's in the bag

Handbags are an attractive target for criminals, and a stolen purse can lead to a stolen identity. Here are a few tips to keep your handbag safe while you're out on the town.
1. Keep your purse close to your body. Don't carry a handbag danging from your wrist or hand; someone running by could easily grab it and keep on going.
2. If you must carry your handbag in your hand (i.e., it won't fit over your shoulder or at your elbow), be careful about how you wrap the strap around your wrist. Your wrist could be injured if somebody snatches a tightly wrapped strap.
3. Don't use the handbag hooks in public restrooms. Someone could reach over the top of the stall and grab your purse (or shopping bags). Most women don't want to put their purses on the floor of the bathroom, so -- as awkward as it sounds -- try wearing it around your neck. Alternatively, several commercially available purse hooks (many of which use suction or counterweights) are made to be folded and carried in your handbag.
4. If it's necessary that you put your purse in a shopping cart instead of over your shoulder, add a bit of security: Run the child safety belt through the strap and secure the belt. It'll be secure if someone walks by and tries to pick it up.
5. And last but not least: Consider keeping your wallet in your pocket. If that's not feasible, try putting at least your "crucial cards" (driver's license, insurance card, credit card, etc.) in your pocket. A purse snatcher won't know the difference -- they might end up with your lipstick and cell phone, but your cards will be secured on you.
