In most cases when your attacker hits the ground you should take the opportunity to RUN!

Don't make the mistake of sticking around to teach him a lesson. Not only does it give him an opportunity to turn the tables on you but it may not even legally qualify as self defense!

When your attacker falls but is still fighting, coming at you, or grabbing you (from the ground) however, then it is appropriate to follow up with a good stomp.

Another circumstance is when you are isolated, either stuck in a room with him, or just on a completely empty street at night. Then to you may want to go ahead and make sure he's not fit to get up and chase you.

This is a simple move, you'll either kick him like you would kick a soccer ball,,,

,,,or stomp straight down like you're crushing a can, really put your weight behind it.
