This is a commonly expected move but works best with the element of surprise, therefore I would recommend never doing it first unless he is wide open. Instead try to get his attention off his groin by attacking his nose or eyes first, just before you go for this move.

Ideally you want to grab your attacker by the shoulders or clasp your hands around his neck and pull him towards you sharply. At the same time you want to use your rear leg (the one that's furthest away) and drive the knee upwards into his groin, hopefully crushing his testicles against the pubic bone or at least momentarily stunning him.

Anatomically this works best when thrown upwards at a 45 degree angle! This traps the target between your knee and his body!

The ideal striking area is your thigh, a few inches above the knee. You want to put your hips into it and really drive it upwards hard.

This move can sometimes end a confrontation but can also sometimes seem to have no effect at all. Do not put all your faith in it but even if it doesn't cause the desired effect it usually is at least a good distraction for follow up attacks.

The face and groin are too far away from each other to defend at the same time. If he covers his face go for the groin, when he covers his groin go for the face!

It can also be done without grabbing the shoulders, or even when the attacker is grabbing you in a bearhug or by your arms/wrists/shoulders/hair. If the attacker is grabbing you, it makes it that much harder for him to avoid the knee to the groin as his hands are busy.


This can normally be done no matter how close, but if you are having trouble getting to it, or hitting hard enough, you can cup your hands and drive them into his groin first while scooting you lower body away from him (he will be scooting his lower body as well!). This creates enough room for a very powerful blow!



The most powerful way to do this is when he is grabbing your wrists. Pull away from him to get out of his grip (this is what he wants). This will give him a false sense of security and he will pull back. When he is pulling back, you can suddenly pull yourself towards him and ram your knee straight into his groin (instead of upwards). This is very powerful because it uses the power of you both pulling with your arms.
